There’s a Bear Out There

May 15, 2012

Even in Australia, you don’t normally receive an email notice like this about your kids day care center:

A bear was sighted this afternoon in the woods adjacent to the [childcare center]. Employees are asked not to walk or jog in this area as the Raritan Police Department and Animal Control officers are dealing with this situation.

Security made us aware of the situation early this morning and have a guard posted on site in our parking lot. All teachers were informed that children are not permitted on the playground or on walks until we receive notification that we are allowed to go outside.

So, the kids have matter of factly reported to us over the last couple of days that they couldn’t play outside because of the bear.

Thankfully we’ve not seen a bear near home (so far), although I think I saw one while driving to a work meeting in the south of NJ one day.

Don’t worry – Dwight will protect us.

I do love the email from today… This play care center rocks! No wonder the kids love it there 🙂

    Good afternoon all,

I wanted to let all of you know that we were given the OK to take the children outside within the fenced playground areas.

The **** security team has been conducting intensive surveillance of the grounds, reviewing camera footage of the campus and communicating with the Raritan PD to be sure that there have been no further bear sightings. If no more observations are made this week or weekend, we will be able to resume our walks on the campus next week.

Thank you all for your patience and understanding. Your child’s safety is always our first priority.

Have a great day and enjoy the sunshine…. We will be 🙂

Have really enjoyed reading about your trip, and seeing the great photos. However, the bear story is fantastic…. wouldnt happen in Sydney (or even in Newcastle)

Baha…. Gideon has decided he’d like a bear to visit their daycare. Given that it’s up 5 flights in the middle of Sydney, it may be unlikely.
