What’s the verdict Chuck?

February 2, 2013

The 2nd of February being the midpoint of winter, is often known as Groundhog day. It is the day we look to the groundhogs to get the inside word on what is going on. The theory goes, if the groundhog sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather (brrrr!). If he does not see his shadow, there will be an early spring.

The largest Groundhog Day celebration is held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, where crowds as large as 40,000 have gathered to celebrate the holiday since at least 1886, with Phil the Groundhog. Our local Groundhog is Chuck, who lives at Staten Island Zoo. He claims that his predictions are the most reliable in the northeast corner. You should probably substantiate that but I’m happy to take his word on it.

Chuck

It may of been insanity but we had to do it once…

At 5:30am on a freezing cold morning we rose and headed out to Staten Island Zoo to hear what Chuck their groundhog had to say.

“Early Spring” he declared – to the delighted roar of the crowd. Fingers crossed you are right mate 🙂
