BM-b day 1 continues
(Brooklyn Mini-break Day 1 continues)
In the afternoon we walked around Williamsburg a little more…
including the southern the Orthodox Hasidic part where we picked up some AMAZING chocolate babka…
Then we had some down time in our hotel 🙂
We HAD planned on having dinner in Park Slope but this was hijacked by the free wings & fries in the lounge at the hotel…
After which we didn’t need dinner, so it was a walk through Park Slope, Carroll Gardens…
We weren’t to full to get to dessert at the Farmacy Soda & Sundae Shop though.
(the kids walked miles & miles today without complaining – so we definitely had earnt a HUGE dessert 🙂 )
It was a great way to finish a day 🙂
Brooklyn Mini-break Day 1
Every November, the kids have two days off while the teachers have their NJ Education Conference. So we thought we’d take the days off too and head to … Brooklyn.
Yes Brooklyn is only a short drive away but with busy weekends these days it is hard to squeeze in our day trips any more – which is both a 🙂 and a 😦
The family became communters and took mum’s jitney (athough we took one in the 8’s not the 7’s o’clock).
We took the 8:45am jitney to the 9.03am train…
Then the subway across to Williamsburg – all in under an hour!
Our first stop was for a munchkins for E+L (for a fun start to the day and a few extra in case we needed to drip feed during the tour). With our tour starting outside Dunkin’ Donuts (and like usual we were there early) it was hard to resist the pleading looks to go in 🙂
From 10am until noon we did a fabulous Graffiti Walking tour of Williamsburg. It was amazing! The guy that took us around explained all of the different mediums, layering techniques, the history and all about the artists – we really learnt a lot!
We had lunch in Williamsburg at Allswell. (This is a chic burger place by the same guy as Spotted Pig)
The Actual Halloween
Actually it was a little more sedate than usual – as the activities were spread across two days.
It did mean we probably got to eat a whole lot more candy though!
The highlights from the day were probably….
(note it is really really hard to concentrate on anything on Halloween – when all you want is to go trick-or-treating!)
making ghosts for the tree out the front…
pizza with friends…
and then trick-or-treating…
What a great day 🙂
I think our Harry Potter and Creepy doll had an awesome couple of days 🙂
The Friday Halloween
Halloween falls on a Saturday this year…so we get to celebrate it at school and in town on the Friday, and then trick-or-treat on the Saturday. It is awesome!
First there was the school parade….
Then the parties in our class rooms…
Then what to do?
Home time or down town where they block off the streets…I think you know which one E+L picked
Then home to recover via a little roll down the hill to wear off some sugar!
and the best part is – we get to do it all over again tomorrow!

(I’m sure there will be may more)

Boxing Kangaroo flying proudly out front – check.
Kids ready to watch the game – kind-of check.

And the boys played well and did Australia proud. Good job gents!
I’m not sure it is possible to run out of things to do in NYC?
Date night? What to do…
So we caught the train in to *beautiful* Penn Station. We almost missed the train but the conductor held the train for us as we sprinted from the car park. That never happens! We were off to a lucky start!
We walked along the new section of the highline and walked over the new section which gives you a cool view of Penn Station.
We stopped in to a random hotel – The Jane Hotel – for a quick drink. Only to find out that the hotel is modelled on a boat and that it was the hotel that housed the servivors from the Titanic. Very cool! Apparently the standard-sized rooms are so small that they only sleep one person as they are modelled on ship cabins. Sounds luxurious! We stuck to the luxiourously furnished bar…
After which, inspired by watching Master Chef with the kids, we went in search of Manhattan’s best Beef Wellington (which was one of the Master Chef challenges and is also a specialty of Gordon Ramsey. Ultimately it wasn’t the best Beef Wellington, but it was a gorgeous little Romantic spot with live piano music for dinner.

As we were finishing dinner we learnt that had won the Jersey Boys lottery ($27 for tickets in the third row!!! YAY!) so we hot-tailed it up to Time Square for the show. It was a fun show with lots of great New Jersey references.

Thanks Manhattan for another fun evening!
Breakin’ Out
Lachie started break dancing classes this fall and so we thought it would be fun to see how the professionals do it. So we headed into the international break dancin’ convention at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem.
We knew that it was going to be a good show , when we saw the ushers break dancing in the aisles before the show even started.
If the ushers were awesome dancers – how good were the people in the show going to be!!!

We had a great time and all learnt some new moves (not just Lachie!)
It was made even more fun that our friends came along (thanks MAA+K!). Friends even make the subway / train home fun!
Lego Robotics
Coach Eli
Eli has started with a running group that aims to take her from struggling to run one side of the track around the park to running a 5k in ten weeks. The group meets twice a week and then Bianca and Eli go running on Wednesday nights while Lachie is at his Breakin’ class. For this 45 mins mum sees a whole new side of Eli – when she becomes COACH ELI. Let’s just leave this post by saying Eli loves the 45 minutes each week when she gets to “boss mum around”…
