Bike Ride or Obstacle Course?

November 17, 2012
by

Today we thought we’d head up to South Mountain Reserve, our favourite bike riding spot to go for a ride. Sadly it was more of an obstacle course 😦 but we had fun πŸ™‚

The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze

November 10, 2012
by

It was time for something fun! It had been nothing but storm related activities and so we went The Cortland Manor in Sleepy Hollow NY for the Blaze Pumpkin Festival. An entire manor’s grounds were decked out in 5,000 hand carved pumpkins. There were witches, grave stones, dinosaurs, clowns – they had it all! It was truely amazing πŸ™‚

A big thank you to the Arkansas (pronounced “Ar-ken-saw”) crew who fixed our electiricty. You guys rock – THANK YOU!!!

Here is a picture out the window of them fixing our neighbours electricity. Unfortunately they only got theirs back today.

It is amazing how far people have come to help out. It is very humbling. It renews your faith in fellow man πŸ™‚

Power + Snow + Amazing Neighbours

November 7, 2012
by

The day started off well.Β  It only me two hours to get to work πŸ™‚

Then at lunchtime we got a call from our neighbours to tell us that the power was on – YAY!

If we had power on, we wanted to go home but we had a hotel booked for the next two nights… It was 1:30pm in the afternoon but I called our hotel to see if we could cancel at least the next night (but hopefully two nights) as we no longer needed the room. They let us out of both nights without charging us – Thank you!
(They said that they would have no problems finding alternative occupants)

All sorted – we will head home πŸ™‚
(our neighbours had better not be wrong!)

The storm started mid-afternoon.

Nathan, Eli + Lachie made it home at normal time πŸ™‚

Bianca finished work at 5pm and headed to Port AuthorityΒ (eek one of the most horrible places in Manhattan). On previous visits the waiting lines for busesΒ had been hours long, but tonight she was on a bus in 25 minutes. While on the bus she realised how heavy it was snowing and did not look forward to the 1.7 mile walk. As the bus went through the dodgy back streets of Newark and Irvington, she asked the other passengers if anyone was going to Maplewood. It turned out that the man behind her was. She asked if he was being picked up. He was. She asked if minded giving her a lift. He said sure and asked her where she wanted to go in Maplewood. She said anywhere as she was happy just to get closer to home! After polite too-ing and fro-ing she ended up accepting a lift all the way to her house. Then when he found each other’s addresses – we were amazed to find out we only livedΒ three doors away from each other. We were practically neighbours. I was lucky enough to get a lift all the way home and meet a kind friendly neighbour. There is nothing like a storm for bringing people together!

We were back in our home – heat + electicity (no food as yet) but all was looking good again πŸ™‚

Now snow?

November 6, 2012
by

Are you kidding me? The forecast is for snow! AΒ Nor’easter is headed our way tomorrowΒ – eek!
Still with no heat or electricity at home, the thought of the temperature dropping with the Nor’easter headed our way…argh!
I’m booking into a hotel for the next three nights.

Sounds like a good idea right? But not as easy at is sounds as half of NY and NJ are also looking 😦

However it was my lucky day (?) as after two and a half hours of searching (thank you to my work for turning a blind eye while I used up valuable resources / time while enjoying their heat!), I found something. Amazingly it is only 40 minutes drive from Nathan’s work and the kids daycare. Plus the hotel is on the only working train line in NJ. It is meant to be πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚Β  We can go straight from work and although I don’t have any spare clothes it also happens to be right next door to a massive shopping center. Next problem solved too!

A hotel for Tue, Wed + Thurs nights – BLISS. We can ride out the storm there and reassess on the weekend.
